Freyberg High School is located in a city called Palmerston North, in the heart of the North Island of New Zealand.
Palmerston North has one of the lowest crime figures in the country, making it a popular choice of residence for many young people and families.
It is a safe and prosperous city, with no part of the city more than 15 minutes drive from any other part.
Palmerston North is a city of over 80,000 inhabitants with a very strong focus on education. Named “The Knowledge City” and “Student City“, it is the home to more than 70 educational and research institutions, including:
- Massey University;
- The IPU New Zealand – A tertiary institution;
- UCOL – a Polytechnic offering a range of degree courses;
- An award winning City Library;
- Te Manawa – Art Gallery and Science Centre.
Palmerston North is a short two hour drive north from the capital city, Wellington and only 40 minutes from the nearest beach. Waikanae and Kapiti Coast beaches are just over an hour’s drive away.
The mountains in the Central North Island are within two hours drive of the region, convenient for weekend trips. International students at Freyberg have the opportunity to travel here on school trips. Some of these trips include spending a week mountain climbing, white water rafting and tramping at Tongariro National Park, as well as an overnight trip to Whakapapa Ski Field. This region is famous for many outdoor activities.
The city is surrounded by rich farmland and beautiful mountain country, making it the ideal location for one of the major agricultural research centres in the country. It is the base for New Zealand Agricultural Research, Horticulture Research and the Fonterra Research Centre (formerly the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute).
