The Region

Palmerston North is a short two hour drive north from the capital city, Wellington and only 40  minutes from the nearest beach. Waikanae and Kapiti Coast beaches are just over an hour’s drive away.

The mountains in the Central North Island are within two hours drive of the region, convenient for weekend trips. International students at Freyberg have the opportunity to travel here on school trips. Some of these trips include spending a week mountain climbing, white water rafting and tramping at Tongariro National Park, as well as an overnight trip to Whakapapa Ski Field. This region is famous for many outdoor activities.

The city is surrounded by rich farmland and beautiful mountain country, making it the ideal location for one of the major agricultural research centres in the country. It is the base for New Zealand Agricultural Research, Horticulture Research and the Fonterra Research Centre (formerly the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute).
