On Friday the 6th of September the Freyberg 1st XI Girls Hockey Team played Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Ruamata from Rotorua in the finals at the Mary Clinton Cup Tournament in Whanganui. It was an exciting game to watch as TKKM O Ruamata had previously won their semi-final match 5-0 so the girls were in for a challenge. After the first 5 minutes TKKM O Ruamata were leading 1-0. The Freyberg girls worked hard however and managed to even the score at half time with a convincing goal scored by Year 11 student Jade Cooley-East who was the second top goal scorer for the tournament and Most Valuable Player for the Freyberg team. In the 3rd quarter Freyberg was awarded a stroke which, Year 13 and Captain of the team, Maddie Hennrie put straight into the net. The girls had a hard fought last quarter trying to keep the lead, but they managed to keep them out finishing the game 2-1 to Freyberg. Placing 1st in the tournament out of 16 teams.
Coach Brooke Batley and Manager Alice Polglase said “The girls were very deserving of the cup as they were determined and worked hard the entire game. It was a fantastic end to the hockey season and they could not have been more proud of all the girls”.
