Awareness of the environment and our place in it is an important aspect of the New Zealand Curriculum.
One of its aims is to educate students to be connected to the land and environment, and to contribute to the social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing of New Zealand.
The NZC also encourages students to participate and take action as critical, informed and responsible citizens. This can be demonstrated through activities when students ask questions, gather information, consider ways in which people make decisions and participate in social action.
However, student safety is also important and we want to make a distinction between students who are marching with a genuine concern and those who just see it as afternoon off school. Consequently, at Freyberg High School, if your caregiver rings the student centre and supports you marching you will be recorded as an explained absence. If they don’t you will be marked as truant and the normal consequences will apply.
