The women’s Suffrage 125 events held on Friday 21st September were a success, thanks to the hard work of the staff and student team behind the organisation. A staff breakfast raised funds for the Women’s Refuge in Palmerston North, and this was added to the mufti day funds. Over $900 was raised so thank you if you contributed. National President of the National Women’s Council, and ex-Freyberg student Vanisa Dhiru spoke at Kapiti assembly, and led workshops which empowered our students to use their voices and encourage equality in all parts of their lives. And the lunchtime suffrage rally re-enactment was a memorable way to remember what the suffragists went through to secure the right for women in Aotearoa New Zealand to vote in local elections. The gender neutral inform was presented, as well as a white camellia tree, a symbol of the work Kate Sheppard and her volunteers put in 125 years ago this week.
