125 years ago this week, women in Aotearoa New Zealand were granted the right to vote in local elections. Freyberg High School will be marking this event with a range of activities which include assembly speakers, a video about what equality means to us, workshops with ex-student and President of the National Women’s Council, Vanisa Dhiru, and a mufti day to support Women’s Refuge in Palmerston North. Suffrage Week ends with the re-enactment of a suffragist rally at lunchtime on Friday in the E Block quad. Special guests will be attending, including the Mayor, Grant Smith, and our local MP Iain Lees-Galloway. Our very own petition, modelled on the original suffrage petition will be presented at the rally. We’d love to see lots of students there to help celebrate Suffrage 125.
