With clouds clearing, a 26 year old school record broken, and a super costume competition, Freyberg’s 2015 Athletics finals was an unforgettable day for most. School and house pride was clearly visible in both the costumes and effort put into the various events.
Super Heroes and Super Villains dominated the Costume Competition, with Josie Carson’s Captain America costume winning first place, and Batman’s adversaries Poison Ivy and Harlequin also placing well. Run by the Environmental Committee, there were a good number of entries in the competition – particularly from Kapiti House who won Best House Costumes.
New Zealand Rugby age group representative, Tobias Wickham, matched a 26 year old record in the 100m Intermediate Boys’ dash. Donning his speedy white cap, he equaled Damien Eden’s 1989 record of 11.6 seconds.
Ranae Savill came very close to achieving a record of her own in the Junior Girls’ high jump, narrowly missing the school record by 1cm with her two attempts. Top athletes will now go on to compete at the Manawatu Inter-Secondary School’s Athletics competition on the 21st of March.
There was a good level of community involvement with plenty of public spectators and even Member of Parliament Jono Naylor supporting the athletes. Mrs Thomas-Bryant, who ran the event was impressed with the outstanding efforts from top athletes, and the great behaviour from the crowd throughout the day.
After adding to their lead at lunchtime with long distance and relay wins, Manawatu house were clear winners. Ruahine and Kapiti Houses were very close all the way through with Ruahine’s Junior runners proving to be the difference in the Inter-House Competition.
